Tournament (Championship in Wipeout) is a game mode in the Wipeout series. A tournament is a series of a number of races, which take place in a succession.

Gameplay[]

The maximum number of races in a single tournament depends on the game; e.g. in Wipeout HD/Fury, you can set up to 12 races in a tournament. The gameplay itself is similar to single races, but when a race is over, a new race will start and keep going this way until no more races are available. At the end of each race, points are given to each team depending on their final positions. The tournament has a unique regulation related to elimination. In typical cases, contenders eliminated in a race are awarded no points, even if their final positions would have been eligible for points. To win a tournament, winning every race is not necessary, but accumulating the most points at the end of the tournament is a must.

Scoring[]

Wipeout[]

In Wipeout, the scoring system for the Championship is as below:

  • First place - 9 points
  • Second place - 7 points
  • Third place - 5 points
  • Fourth place - 3 points
  • Fifth place - 2 points
  • Sixth place - 1 point
  • Seventh place or lower - 0 points

In addition to the points scoring, the player must finish a race in the top three in order to Qualify for the next race. Should they finish outside of the top three, the player can restart the race using retries, though this is limited to three times. The player must also finish first in the overall standings of the Championship to win it.

Winning the Venom Championship unlocks the Rapier speed class and the Firestar track. Winning the Rapier Championship allows the player to view the Credits of the game.

Wipeout 3[]

In Wipeout 3, the scoring system for the Tournament is as below:

  • First place - 10 points
  • Second place - 6 points
  • Third place - 4 points
  • Fourth place - 3 points
  • Fifth place - 2 points
  • Sixth place - 1 point
  • Seventh place or lower - 0 points
  • Elimination rule: No points awarded if the player gets eliminated

Winning the Vector tournament will unlock Venom to play on this mode. The same proceeds for Rapier and Phantom.

Tiebreaking[]

In the official Wipeout 3 website, there is additional information on how the victor of a tournament is determined should there be a tie for the first place. The information reads as follows:

In the advent of a tie, the pilot with the most medals wins, and in the case of this being a tie, the player with a greater value of medals wins (gold being worth 3 points, silver 2, and bronze 1). In the continued case of a tie, the player with the lowest overall racing time for the four tracks wins.

Wipeout Pure, Wipeout Pulse, and Wipeout HD/Fury[]

In Wipeout Pure, Wipeout Pulse and Wipeout HD/Fury, the scoring system for the Tournament is as below:

  • First place - 8 points
  • Second place - 6 points
  • Third place - 5 points
  • Fourth place - 4 points
  • Fifth place - 3 points
  • Sixth place - 2 points
  • Seventh place - 1 point
  • Eighth place - 0 points
